YWCA Now the Site of Galveston's Newest Luxury Condos

GALVESTON —Originally designed by William Ward Watkin, the first professor of architecture at Rice University, Jackson Square is now the site of Galveston’s newest luxury condominiums.

Located at 612 21st Street, the building was commissioned by the prominent Mrs. J.C. League. The daughter of one of Galveston’s founding fathers, George Ball, Mrs. League had the building built as a memorial to her daughter, Mrs. Waters S. Davis, Jr.The Y.W.C.A was used for it’s purpose for many generations to come and holds fond memories for more than several generations of Galvestonians who took dance classes, played basketball or learned to swim there.

Proudly listed on the Texas Historical Register, Jackson Square is a fine example of Italian Mediterranean architecture frequently employed by Watkin throughout Houston, and is a beautiful example of simple contrast between the arched windows of the first floor and the shuttered 12-pane over 12-pane windows above.

The building recently acquired and developed by J&S Acquisitions Group, LTD., Jackson Square is being restored to its former splendor as luxury condominiums. Jackson Square amenities include on-site gated parking, beautifully appointed two story courtyard, resident party room, rich wood floors, granite countertops, stainless appliances, individual storage facilities, elegant swimming pool, hot tub and some units have private patios.
